RAPP -- Relatives As Parents Program

Sponsored by MAC Incorporated and Seton Center Catholic Charities, Inc.

Did you know that it is estimated that 3.7 million children in the United States live in a household headed by a relative other than their birth parents.  For one third of these children, neither parent is  present and the relative has taken the role of primary caregiver for that child.  The problems cross all socio-economic levels and racial groups.

The growing trend of parenting responsibilities is falling to relatives, especially older relatives.  This situation raises problems that our society has not addressed.  Relatives might not be financially, physically, or emotionally ready to raise another family.  Still, they take on this responsibility out of love of the children..
MAC is reaching out in a new way to address the "Relative Caregiver" issues.   Working with Seton Center Catholic Services, a resource for grandparent and other relative caregivers has been developed in Princess Anne, Maryland.

The overall goal of this project is to strengthen community families, partnership with other agencies on behalf of families, and address family needs.   These goals will be accomplished through involvement in: support groups, counseling and support services, information & referral services, educational classes in parenting skills, legal issues, social and recreational activities, health & nutrition programs, and increasing political awareness of the issues.
